Our Schools’ Roofs and their Codes

Now that students are going back to school, the safety of children’s school buildings is of utmost priority, and the codes and standards related to commercial roofing help maintain it.

Building Codes are “…performance and prescriptive construction requirements for commercial and industrial buildings…” to ensure the safety and durability of buildings, while standards are used as bases to compare building construction.

According to the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), there are three different types of construction standards:

  1. Testing Standards: Establish the testing methods and their subsequent acceptable results
  2. Rating Standards: Detail measurement methods for appropriate comparisons of products
  3. Design Standards: Define criteria for specific roofing system designs

These codes and standards set the stage for designing durable and long-lasting roofing systems that protect school buildings every day.

There are several types of commercial roofs that school systems can select from, chosen based on variables such as the climate the school is located in, cost, roof use, etc. Whether the school decides to install a metal roof because of its durability, or a TPO/PVC for its cost and resistance to UV rays, it is important to understand the number one need of the occupants: safety.

One of the most important tasks to ensure the durability and safety of a commercial roof system is ongoing maintenance. Regular inspections (bi-annual is recommended) by a qualified roofing contractor will catch potential damage and repair any small issues before they become much larger problems or roof leaks. In addition, keeping the roof clean from debris helps prevent damaging situations such as ponding and clogged downspouts.

By having a professional roofing contractor perform ongoing inspections and needed maintenance, school systems can extend the lifespan of their roofs, both saving money and preventing disruptions to students’ education.
